I had to go to Austria for work a few months ago, and while I was largely underwhelmed with the local fare (pork and potatoes, ugh) I fell in love with the soup that is traditionally served as a starter, a very flavorful clear vegetable broth with your choice of add ins (semolina dumplings, chives, sliced pancake, etc). I bought this book just for that soup recipe, because it's not available on the internet. The recipe in this book for clear vegetable broth is water and vegetarian bouillon cubes. BOUILLON CUBES! You call that a traditional Austrian recipe???!!! What a rip off.Product details

I am a culinary expert cooking around the world. I was asked to review this book and there is nothing out there more traditional than this book in Austrian cooking!! Make sure you add this to your library as this is a must have. I can recommend this book more!

I ordered this book for my grandson, who had spent a semester of college in Austria. He was interested in making some of the recipes from food served by his host family. The book was much smaller than anticipated, almost a pamphlet, but all of the major recipes in which he was interested were included. He is happy with the book and has made many of the recipes.
Although one of the most recent cookbooks about the varied cuisine of Austria, this slim collection of about 100 Austrian standards will do for English-speaking cooks. Published in Britain in 1997 and now reprinted for the American market, the cooking terms nevertheless will have an English-accented kitchen vocabulary. Still, recipes are easy to follow. The index could have been better-organized for readability,listing the German title and then an English translation in parentheses - all on one line. There are no photos save for that very unattractive, poor resolution scan of a cover for this softcover book.
Yet there are few well-edited cookbooks on Austrian cuisine on the market. Gretel Beer's Austrian Cooking and Baking Austrian Cooking and Baking still holds up well after 35 years, in spite of its shortcomings. A better and well-illustrated competitor in the 100-recipe category would be Culinary Austria (published 2006 in Austria by Krenn Verlag)
