"Humor increases persuasion's effectiveness." - Dr. Jim Lyttle

I am comedian/author/dudeman Marshall Chiles and I will show you step-by-step proven methodologies to help add humor to your business presentations in order to increase your persuasion, maximize your impact, and be one of the cool kids.

"I used your recommendations and absolutely crushed my sales presentation at the conference. Was told I was a stand out speaker and was really able to get the crowd engaged with some humor. You the man!" - Ryan Hughes, 360 Rick Partners

After 16 years as a comedian and comedy entrepreneur, I have taken my knowledge of comedy and business to write this book. YPIJ initially was as an introductory course for new comedians, then I adapted it for business presenters as a speech. Over the last three years, I have been able to fine-tune the lessons that easily help people be funnier on stage. What really reenforced my belief in what I have to offer happened in 2015 when the presentation form of YPIJ won an award from YPO (Young Presidents' Organization www.ypo.org). YPO is one of the most elite executive groups on the planet, and they not only hired me, but honored Your Presentation is a Joke as award worthy which helped me finally feel acceptance.

If you have a business presentation, then you want to stand out, make people pay more attention and give you their money. I submit humor is the way to reach those goals. In this book you will learn proven techniques from adding funny images, to finding the funny in (almost) any subject, to writing self-deprecating jokes, and more. So whether you’re a seasoned public speaker, a new speaker, or you just think I'm pretty and want to give me money, you should get Your Presentation is a Joke.

Unlike books about about being a comedian, "Your Presentation is a Joke" is specially written to the business audience. While a stand-up comedy how-to book might help you prepare for appearing on a basement comedy club stage, it could get you fired from your job if you used the same routine at a corporate seminar. Inappropriate comments in a corporate environment include anything to do with sex, religion, and politics, and also any comments that rag on someone else. Hopefully your mother taught you to be respectful, but since too many mothers neglected to teach that lesson, Marshall Chiles takes a chapter to break down the details of how to act in public.
Telling a joke not only requires timing, explains Chiles, but the placement of a joke in a speech also has critical impact. After you tell a joke, the audience is excited to hear what you will say next. That's a great time to hit them with your main point or call to action, since that's when they are most suceptible.
Chiles provides useful resources, like a website that can help you identify the source of an image that you find on the web. Go to [...] and enter the URL of an image, and it will return not only where else you can find the image, but where you can find the highest quality one, too. On his own site, too, [...], Chiles provides useful material as well.
He teaches techniques that can be easily applied, and since they are formulaic, anyone can do them. For example, he suggests choosing a topic, writing a list of true sentences about it, and then writing a list of specific words related to the topic. You will use these words as the punch word (last word in the sentence) when you make the punchlines. Then choose an emotion, so for example, if your subject is "traffic," you might choose the emotion "hate" (i.e., Traffic makes me angry; Traffic makes me competitive; Traffic reports never mention the road I am on while I am on it.) Next, reverse the emotion and adjust the sentence, and you're done: I love traffic because it brings out my competitive side; I like to hear about the traffic on other people's commutes; I love starting off my day frustrated. He gives many more examples, which makes this a useful exercise which is well illustrated.
In teaching misdirection, Chiles gives a very simple exercise. He says to write a basic sentence and then choose the keywords and find synonyms and antonyms, or at least similar and opposite concepts, and list them. Then try to rewrite the sentence replacing some of the original words with some of the related or opposite words. That exercise can get your mind thinking of ways to misdirect the audience.
I've read many books about becoming a stand-up comic, and they have all added some new idea of another. Chiles' book, on the other hand, is not trying to make you a comedian. His specific goal is to make you a better business presenter. If that's your goal, too, take the time to read this clearly-written, relatively short book.

Love the practical strategies that are applicable beyond the speaker's stage. Highly recommend this book for anyone trying to find the humor in life.
Very easy to follow. The process for implementing humor and jokes into a presentation are clearly presented so that the reader can follow the instructions and improve their presentation.
I learned a lot reading this book. I have been a DJ for 15 years, been on the radio, gave presentations but never knew how to win over the people I was talking to. I would recommend this book.
Great little guide on how to add some humor to your content - whether it's how you write, speak or simply communicate in business or even social settings. The core is a simple formula that the author uses and walks you through. This is like a humor 101 primer to get you started on the road to funnier.
I was not impressed with this book. It is poorly written and arranged. The jokes in it are not at all the least bit funny. I went ahead and followed Chiles' procedure for a speech I was to make to the entire faculty of my university. It worked amazingly. The president raved that my words were impactful. I received a note from an outstanding communication (speech) professor stating that my speech was "elegant." Go ahead and do the exercises, even if you think it is stupid. You won't be sorry.
This is an informative, and humorous guide, to injecting humor into your presentations. The exercises are worth your time to try, and the short bulleted lists of what to do "1, 2, 3.." work for me. I really enjoyed the vignettes both current, and those from history.

I've always tried to add humor into my presentations, and this book definitely helped me understand when to deliver, and where to "punch it up".

It's a short read (not including the exercises). A worthwhile investment into yourself, and your "product". In my case, a non-profit organization.

Now if only it helped with stage fright...
It's always disconcerting when your presentation rhythm is thrown off by the snoring in the room.

Okay, it was never that bad, but as a full-time trainer, I am always looking for ways to engage adult learners. While this book may have presentation speakers as its target audience, ALL of the techniques can be used by those of us who conduct anywhere between four-hour and two-week training sessions. Essentially, anyone who has to stand up in front of others, even if its at a one-hour weekly meeting, can benefit from this book.

Marshall Chiles breaks presentations down into targeted areas (where you should inject humor), then gives the readers basic fundamentals to complete in order to discover humorous ideas. Know that this is a "where-the-rubber-meets-the-road" moment. To quote Chiles, to improve and "in order to be on the level of someone like Michael Jordan, you need to do the work like Michael Jordan." Like anything else in life, this book will work for you if you are willing to put in the time.

Bottom Line Excellent pointers, easy to understand, a system that can and will work for anyone and everyone.
